Disclosure: we make Good Llama. This page exists because "why not just use eBay's free alerts?" is the first question every prospective user asks us — and it deserves a straight answer.
What eBay's built-in alerts actually do
Save a search on eBay and you get two channels: an email digest that fires at most once per day, and app push notifications that are faster but uncontrollable. Both match on keywords alone. Three consequences follow:
- You're often a day late. The daily email is a summary of what happened, not a heads-up about what's happening. eBay's community forums have years of threads about digests arriving late or quietly stopping altogether.
- Keywords lie. A saved search for "Charizard PSA 10" happily surfaces proxies, customs, oricas, Japanese variants you didn't want, and 40-card lots that mention Charizard once.
- No price context. eBay tells you a listing exists. It doesn't tell you the same card in the same grade sold nine times last month at a median 35% higher.
The honest test: do you need more than free?
You don't, if: you're patient, your want-list is generic ("any vintage holo lot"), and missing a deal costs you nothing but a shrug. eBay's free alerts are genuinely fine for that — keep your money.
You do, if any of these sound familiar: you've clicked an alert to find the item already sold; you've bought a "deal" that turned out to be retail; you've been burned by a look-alike; or you refresh the same search several times a day. At that point you're paying with time and missed cards instead of dollars.

What Good Llama changes
- Speed you control: new Buy It Now and Best Offer listings scanned every minute on Pro (5-minute on Starter). Your trial runs at Pro speed.
- Photo verification (Pokémon live today): the actual listing photo is checked against the exact card, set number, edition, and grade you asked for. Proxies and customs never reach your inbox. Other categories are rolling out.
- Sold-comps scoring: each alert is priced against recent sold comparables — in June, our engine flagged 66 listings at 15%+ below comps (median 35% below) across just 27 watched searches.
What we don't do (yet)
No auction sniping — we watch new listings; snipers bid endgame auctions (Gixen is free and good at that). Verification beyond Pokémon is still rolling out — other categories get keyword matching plus comps scoring today. And we cost money after the 7-day trial ($19–$99/mo), which only makes sense if being first to the right card is worth more than that to you.
See the live feed of what it's catching, browse the Pokémon page for how verification works, or run the 7-day trial — $0 today, card required, reminder email before it ends, one-click cancel.
